The Barbican Centre
Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, the Barbican had to close in mid-March. We are currently working to present this work online during this period. Once the Barbican reopens, the work will again be on display.
As part of Lumen’s continuing partnership with the Barbican Centre, we were delighted to be commissioned to produce a third work for their Level G public spaces. This work is Playing Democracy, by 2019 Lumen Prize finalist, Ling Tan.
Playing Democracy is a giant two player game of Pong, exploring the principles of democracy.
As part of this interactive installation, participants can choose to work together, change the rules or break them, which can cause the game to fall apart.
The installation by artist Ling Tan brings into question ideas around social structures, collective responsibility and agency in participation. Players can adjust its fairness, equality and freedom parameters to increase the difficulty of the game. By working together the game can be played longer, or players can compete to win.
